It would be no surprise to me if Washington set the fires to make it harder for the Red Coats to have supplies or barracks to stay in. That would be customary during war.
It’s too bad we didn’t do that in our terrible exodus of Afghanistan. Then again our current President has never had a real job or serve in the military, he has just been a life long politician. (Sorry for the political statement.)
Amazing that NY was burned, but grew back so much stronger AFTER the British left! It was sad that the loyalists couldn't see beyond their comfortable positions, that freedom waited for them just beyond that door. We have so many today that think Uncle Sam will take care of them, forgetting Franklin's warning of the cost of giving up freedom for safety/security. Our national debt has spiraled out of control due to the do-gooders--wolves in sheep's clothing. Our country needs to stand up, get back to a balanced budget and toss the socialist crazies out of Congress.
Another great lesson this morning, Tara! I look forward to these every day. As usual, this new information about Nrw York burning in today's lesson sheds great light on many things, but especially on how there was American citizens, too! Loyalists vs Patriots.
People, (Loyalists) more content with the Status Quo than to fight for freedom and independence, hoping that the situation will straighten itself out, had to present George Washington with a conundrum. He had to fight the British as well as contend with reluctant Loyalists. (That situation seems eerily similar to our current day status.)
The fire in New York may well have been set by Providence or some other honest fellow. Either way, Washington couldn't just watch the British remain in a comfortable and accepting place without something to disrupt the situation. I find it hard to understand why Washington had to seek the approval of Congress before he engaged in a military action or tactic. That burden had to have made his job much more difficult. But, whether the fire was set by Washington or some other honest fellow, New York burned and the British had fewer supplies and less comfortable furnishings than before, and the Loyalists had their Status Quo removed.
Absolutely outstanding and timely post, Tara! So many valuable lessons we need to take heed to today. Whether Washington did it or not he certainly would have supported it. First of all Washington made sure none of the supplies, artillery or buildings (including the comfortable barracks) were not left for the enemy to use. Didn’t happen in recent times. He also learned from past mistakes and losses. Not happening today. Most importantly the patriots were determined to win because they valued liberty. They were willing to fight for it even if it meant resisting fellow citizens who didn’t share the same values. This scenario sounds familiar to what is happening now. Where are our Washingtons? Hopefully patriots have other non-violent ways of defeating those who want to destroy the USA.
As we watched cities of America burn over the past few years, I find your commentary is as true of today as it is of September 1776. I expect to see more of our cities burn before I die.
True. It was a civil war. Many families were even divided. However, those who wanted their freedom were more determined. The Texas Rangers had a saying that “You can’t stop a good man who just keeps a’comin’.”
Did Loyalists not care that their freedoms were being trampled? Were they unable to see the infringement on their liberty? Or perhaps they saw the problems, but hoped that the situation would right itself.....
There are none so blind as those who will not see......Not that they can’t see but they will not see.....

No need to apologize. It’s the truth.
Ditto 🎯🎯🎯
Spot on!
The British never gave Washington the credit he deserved....

Kinda like what we have today.
Doesn't seem like the American people have gained any great wisdom since 1776 ...
We are losing more of of our God given rights and freedoms daily via tyranny.

I didn't really understand this story until now. Thanks Tara!
Really like that last sentence. They were indeed fighting for their liberty but also from not having their “neck stretched” on the gallows!
In the end, it was for the best. A stronger city was born. Thanks Tara for this lesson.
