Thanks for this historical insight into an overlooked era of history. WW1 was so formative to the thinking of modern culture but is not recognized for the influence it had. I never heard this story of Truman, either. Those were his kind of people!

We were taught more about WWII and I've read quite a bit about I it. I think it's time I find some good books on WWI. I think I'll start with my wife's grandfather's journal of his time in WWI. He was a private on the ground.
