Thank you Tara for another MOH Monday. This one, about a ne-er do well, Sgt. Maynard Smith, "Snuffy Smith" tells of a lazy and privileged man who was in the army as the alternative to jail. His MOH came when he was responsible for the successful return to base of B17 that was shot to hell. His heroic efforts to put out severe fires and to save a badly wounded gunner as well as the rest of the crew showed his bravery and determination.
Sgt. Smith was a reluctant hero. Tara, like the rest of your readers, what happened with Smiths life after 1943? Thank you Tara!
“I had just done what I had been trained to do. I didn’t know what the hell it was all about. I wasn’t there to get a medal. . . . I just wanted to get it over with and get home.”
No doubt about it this Mr. Smith was a real character. Snuffy was stuffy, but when push came to shove he did his job without hesitation. This has to be one of your best MOH posts, Tara. He turned out to be a hero in spite of himself and a humble one too.
Thank you Tara for another great MOH Monday, what a reluctant hero was Snuffy Smith, could fate have played a part.? Because of him many lives were saved.😊
Very interesting story indeed, the military is designed the make men out of boys and here it made a man out of a spoiled brat! His heroism was true to form for the greatest generation! Even Snuffy Smith was humble about his metal. Thanks Tara!

Humble to the end and maybe a little snuffy. He did a great job of saving the plane and Tail gunner and himself. Thanks Tara. 🙏❤️💪🇺🇲

Exactly Right Patty ✅️ 👍😊🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Another remarkable story. Even the "Snuffies" of life made a remarkable contribution during WW2. "He decided to stay and fight the fire."
Ah! The mark of a true Hero: "...duty... Get it over with so I could go home!" Thank you, Tara Ross, for keeping the memory of Maynard Smith alive.

Medal of Honor Monday. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

One wonders if his experience served as a wakeup call after he left the service.
🇺🇸 Even the military, apparently, couldn't change a brat. It did give him the chance to be a hero, and he was, for 90 minutes.
Reminds me a bit of Oskar Schindler.
Thanks for sharing the story, TR. 🇺🇲

The unsuspecting hero….Thank you Maynard Smith for seeing the crew and the aircraft home safely.
