I believe the relationship developed quickly between the two because it fulfilled a deep longing in each of them. Lafayette longed for a father and Washington longed for a son...and each one completely fulfilled the longings of the other. It produced a great working relationship that advanced the cause of freedom! We are the benefactors of that.

It is a wonder that Lafayette did not immigrate, but he would not turn his back on his responsibility back in France. As a French patriot due to his upbringing, he wanted the best for his own country as well as for the cause he so freely joined at the risk of the displeasure of his King and at the risk of his own life. As such, he assumed a beloved role in the history of our nation.. Thanks for telling this story of the Marquis de Lafayette to us again, Tara Ross.
