TDIH: Jefferson on Liberty of Conscience
"It behooves every man who values liberty of conscience for himself, to resist invasions of it in the case of others."
On this day in 1803, Thomas Jefferson writes a letter to his friend Benjamin Rush.
"It behooves every man who values liberty of conscience for himself," Jefferson wrote, "to resist invasions of it in the case of others; or their case may, by change of circumstance, become his own."
Hmm. Whatever would he make of recent events? Would he think that we'd stood firm for liberty, even when we disagreed with our fellow American?
Dear regular readers: Back to full-fledged history stories Monday!
The Revolutionary War was fought over government oppression and intrusion. The corrupt government we have today has passed oppressive tax bills, restricted our Rights, openly defies the Constitution, and slowly grinds away at our freedom. Our founding fathers would be ashamed of our current situation.
I am sure that Jefferson and the other Founding Fathers would be very disappointed in us. We have forgotten the lessons they tried to teach us.
