Public opinion began to turn on the “intemperate & violent Measures” of the pro-Constitution majority. Wilson’s impromptu October 6 speech helped save the day.
James Wilson has become my favorite founder over the last five years of study. America has forgotten the definition of the word republic, and the design given us by our framers has been lost in the shifting/corrupting language of forgotten history.
Along with James Madison, James Wilson articulated some of the very best language clues to the functional elements of our republic.
At the close of the adopting convention in PA, he said: “A free government has often been compared to a pyramid…it is laid on the broad basis of the people; its powers gradually arise…until they end in that most permanent of all forms. When you examine all of its parts, they will invariably be found to preserve that essential mark of free governments, a chain of connection with the people.” —to the Pennsylvania Adopting Convention, Tues December 11, 1787
The thoughtful words of a calm understanding person, if widely circulated, can improve any inflammatory or hotly contested issue. Thank you Ms .Tara Ross.
Words matter and the logic in the words matter even more. Through the years speeches have been given that promote American Ideals, promote challenge and comfort the American People. If one listens with discernment, one can separate the wheat from the chaff, the genuine from the disingenuous. Mr. Wilson's speech proves that with conviction of heart and a pure motive it doesn't take a celebrity to be persuasive.
I did not know how important James Wilson was to the ratification. I did know that it was contentious. Thankfully, Wilson and others saved the day. Again, thank you Tara!
I have known of James Madison contributions forever. I know now to extend this to James Wilson thanks to you Tara. Another day and a lesson learned because of your History Posts.
Why oh why is civics ignored at the secondary level??? Our youth need to be well informed to be able to understand their voting rights and responsibilities as citizens of this greatest of countries.
In a world filled with kleptocaries, our Constitution expanded the numbers of the ruling class while providing for unheard of rights for the individual. My freshman English teacher said that there was no such thing as good writing, only rewriting.
A lot of people in this time and place have no idea how hard it was to get our Constitution accepted. Not only did a lot of hard work get it written but just as much hard work was needed to get it passed.

Great story. Never heard this before. Now I gotta look up Wilson's whole speech! Thanks again.
Thanks! That sure sounds like something Ben Franklin would have said!
