The teaching of personal responsibility, moral character and patriotism falls on family first, schools second and society as a whole third. I believe in the last 60 years we have failed in all three categories. With both parents working most of the children are now being raised in day cares with many day care providers that are not emotionally involved in a life and up bringing of a child. Add that with many irresponsible adults having children that simply do not know of home life. Schools have failed in their responsibility for educating and disciplining of children. The policies instituted in many school systems in the last 60 years no longer allowing teachers to keep order in class or expel kids that are unruly. This is a disservice to kids who want to be in school and learn. The mass media that everyone has access to glamorizes and promotes bad behaviors and finally, our government and social system that rewards bad behaviors.

Coolidge was so right we are responsible for our behavior it’s always our choice to do what’s right or wrong ! Today I feel that our government wants to remove that responsibility and that’s wrong . Government never solved anything only created problems!

How far we as Americans have fallen from the intent of our founders who did not trust in centralized power in government. Our founders intent was just enough government to protect our nations interests and more power to the people and states. Now whenever there's problems everyone looks to the federal government for help and it's not effective. People and private enterprises do more to help (NC, FL, GA. recently) than FEMA!! Government is not the solution but it is the problem as Ronald Reagan said.

The learning of character, industry, thrift and self control all begin and are reinforced in the home. LBJ’s well meaning but family destroying social programs, and their offsprings continue to eat away at the moral fiber of the country. Many of these programs encourage government dependency instead of self responsibility. It’s interesting that “silent Cal” lived at the beginning of this development.

I spent 30 years in government service which pretty much convinced me that if you ever find that the government is doing something absolutely stupid and even asinine you will find that there’s an act of Congress behind it. Government employees take a lot of grief for doing stuff Congress told them to do.

Personal responsibility, yes, yes, yes. I’m not sure if we are failing to teach this, or if some (not all) just push back on learning this.

We can all look back with some measure of resentment for not having take responsibility for our own actions. We should put those resentments to good use, learn from them in order to move forward and become the person God intends for us to be.

Personal responsibility and respect for others are becoming a lost art. And I believe that the internet is one of the biggest reasons for this.

President Coolidge was absolutely correct. No Socialist promises of nirvana can be even partially true. When government takes from one to give to another, it eventually runs out of money to redistribute.

Besides, I can't imagine that anyone could truly happy and satisfied living on the largess of the government without any personal effort to "earn". Thank you, Tara. Thank you, Calvin Coolidge.

The Constitution only allows the federal government to do a few things. These qualities are necessary to do them though.

Personal responsibility, moral character and patriotism is the task of the parents primarily. If the family unit fails, the children fail and the country suffers. However, the schools also have a duty to fulfill in emphasizing these same principles. Coolidge was a wise man who understood the principles upon which the republic was founded. We have strayed far from these views. Maybe we are going to get back to basics. There is reason to feel change for the better is possible now. Always appreciate the posts about President Coolidge.

All too often we as individuals are faced with the imperfection of our own lives. It is then that we need to look inward and find where the issue is and repair it. Sometimes easy, sometimes monumental, but almost always our own doing. Personal responsibility can be very rewarding, but sometimes embarrassingly painful. Grow up, assume responsibility for your own life. Calvin was right.
