(1) One President’s body was exhumed in order to determine whether his death was really a murder. Which President?
(2) Four Presidents were buried, but their bodies were later exhumed and moved to new locations. Which Presidents?
(3) Which President is the only one not formally mourned by the U.S. government?
1) He ate too many cherries and cream on a hot day. He was exhumed due to rumors he had been poisoned by Southerners due to his opposition to expansion of slave states. Zachary Taylor.
2) So, I knew Lincoln (story earlier this week) and U. S. Grant. After siting Grant's Tomb in NYC, he was moved from a temporary grave. These others emerged elsewhere: George Washington wanted to be buried in Mt. Vernon; the old crypt was in disrepair and building a new one was delayed by Congress' desire to put him in a crypt in the Capitol building... which was never constructed. HE had a grave robbery story involving a disgruntled gardener. James Polk was moved by his family from a family crypt when they sold that property.
3) This one was a surprise to me. John Tyler died in 1862, and wanted to be buried in Richmond VA. The Confederate Gov't honored him with Jefferson Davis putting on quite a show, but the US government refused to recognize him.
1. I know but I looked it up.
2. Lincoln was one - story this week.
3. Nixon. I did know that before this email.
