(1) QUESTION: Which President had a special hand-carved chair reserved for his dog during cabinet meetings?
ANSWER: Warren G. Harding. His Airedale terrier, Laddie Boy, was the first presidential dog to receive regular coverage by the media. Laddie Boy went everywhere with the Hardings! He golfed with the President and attended fundraisers with the First Lady. And, of course, he attended Cabinet meetings, sitting in his own chair.
(2) QUESTION: A second President had a dog who was the half-brother of the dog who got his own chair. Which President?
ANSWER: Calvin Coolidge. His Airedale terrier was named Paul Pry.
(3) QUESTION: One President had a dog that was formerly a New York police dog. Which President?
ANSWER: FDR. The dog was a German Shepherd named Major. There were a few incidents with biting, and the dog could no longer live at the White House.
Thanks for the wonderful stories of Presidents and their dogs.
Gotta love a good dog story! So Biden’s Shepherd wasn’t the first biter! Some dogs are that way and not good with strangers. Most can handle it. Thanks for this tremendous bit of history trivia!
