(1) QUESTION: Who was the first sitting President to participate in a televised presidential debate?
ANSWER: Gerald Ford. The first televised debate was in 1960, but neither candidate was then the sitting President. A second televised debate didn’t occur until 1976 when Ford was running for re-election.
(2) QUESTION: The 101st Airborne Division’s insignia contains a bald eagle, and the division’s nickname is “Screaming Eagles.” There was a real bald eagle that started this tradition, and it was named after which President?
ANSWER: Abraham Lincoln. The eagle was Old Abe, and I wrote a story about him a few days ago. The story is here.
(3) QUESTION: Which President was the first to go aboard a submarine?
ANSWER: Theodore Roosevelt. He was underwater for three hours and even got to pilot the submarine!
