Thanks everyone for voting yesterday. The results, as I type this, stand at 82 (yes) - 2 (no), so I will start posting the trivia here, too. I am open to feedback, so please let me know if you change your mind and feel that the trivia is overwhelming your email inboxes. In the meantime, the answers to yesterday’s questions are below.
(1) QUESTION: Who was the first President to take his oath of office in the White House?
ANSWER: Rutherford B. Hayes. He should have taken the oath on March 4, 1877, but that day was a Sunday. He ended up taking a private oath at the White House on Saturday, March 3. He later took a public oath on March 5 at the Capitol.
(2) QUESTION: You may have heard that Jimmy Carter just turned 99 years old, and he is our oldest living President. But do you know which President lived for the longest duration of time after leaving office?
ANSWER: It’s a trick question. The answer is still Jimmy Carter. He broke Herbert Hoover’s record on September 8, 2012. Hoover was previously the longest living ex-President; he passed away 11,553 days after he left the presidency. Carter is setting a tougher record. He’s been out of office for more tha 15,000 days (and counting).
(3) QUESTION: As of today, who is the longest-lived First Lady?
ANSWER: Bess Truman. She passed away when she was 97 years old.
Thanks for the history. I love reading it.
Great to learn these trivia points. It’s also great just to learn more of our history!
