Presidential Trivia Answers (Nov. 1 & 2)

(1) QUESTION: How many Presidents were widowers when they assumed the office? Which Presidents? (I am counting widowers who might have remarried.)

ANSWER: Five. Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, Chester Arthur, and Theodore Roosevelt. Of those five, Roosevelt was the only one who remarried before becoming President.  The other four men never remarried at all.  My story about Jefferson and his love story with his wife is here.

(2) QUESTION: How many Presidents were widowed while they were in the White House? Which Presidents?

ANSWER: Three. John Tyler, Benjamin Harrison, and Woodrow Wilson. All three would eventually remarry.

(3) QUESTION: How many Presidents got married while they were President? Which Presidents?

ANSWER: Three. John Tyler and Woodrow Wilson were both widowed, then remarried while they were President.  Grover Cleveland was a bachelor when he was elected President, but he got married while in office.
