(3) QUESTION: Which President received a pair of grizzly bears as a gift?
ANSWER: Thomas Jefferson. Monticello explains: “Thomas Jefferson received a pair of grizzly bears as a gift from Captain Zebulon Pike in 1807. . . . Pike recognized that the grizzly was a different species of bear from that found in the East and noted in his letter to Jefferson that they were ‘considered by the natives of that country as the most ferocious animals of the continent.’” They didn’t last long at the White House, for obvious reasons.
