(1) QUESTION: Which President held the most press conferences, excluding FDR? (I am omitting FDR because he served so much longer than other Presidents.)
ANSWER: Calvin Coolidge. The American Presidency Project reports that he held 407 press conferences, total, during his time in office, which is an average of 72.9 press conferences per year. The next closest is Harry S. Truman, who held 308 press conferences, at a rate of 41.7 a year.
(2) QUESTION: Which President suffered a stroke on the floor of the House of Representatives?
ANSWER: John Quincy Adams. He was the only former President to serve as a Congressman, and he served for just over 16 years when he suffered his stroke on February 21, 1848. He passed away two days later. Of his election to the House, he wrote: “My election as President of the United States was not half so gratifying to my inmost soul. No election or appointment conferred upon me ever gave me so much pleasure.”
(3) QUESTION: One President met his future wife while he was in 5th grade. The two were high school sweethearts. Which President? UPDATE: Well, this is embarrassing, but I did not dig deep enough on this and was too heavily reliant on the Truman quote below, which mentions 5th grade as the first grade they went to school together. This question should read: "One President met his future wife when he was 6 and she was 5. Which President?"
ANSWER: Harry S Truman. He wrote of his family’s move to Independence, Missouri, and his first meeting with Bess. The Trumans had decided to check out First Presbyterian Church. “We made a number of new acquaintances,” Truman wrote, “and I became interested in one in particular. She had golden curls and has, to this day, the most beautiful blue eyes. We went to Sunday school, public school from the fifth grade through high school, graduated in the same class, and marched down life’s road together. For me she still has the blue eyes and golden hair of yesteryear.”
Fun facts keep them up
President Truman and wife have a wonderful story to share as a lesson some day. I enjoyed all three questions and the journey to find answers. Thanks Tara.
