(1) QUESTION: Which President was the first to have Secret Service protection? This President had only part-time protection.
ANSWER: Grover Cleveland, during his second term in 1894.
(2) QUESTION: Which President was the first to have full-time Secret Service protection?
ANSWER: Theodore Roosevelt. He became President, you may remember, because he was Vice President when President William McKinley was assassinated.
(3) QUESTION: A Secret Service agent threw his body in front of a Vice President, shielding him from an assassin. The two were also witnesses as an assassin took aim at the sitting President. Which Vice President?
ANSWER: LBJ, who was present when John F. Kennedy was shot. The agent was Rufus Youngblood. Johnson described the scene in his memoirs: “Agent Youngblood spun around, shoved me on the shoulder to push me down, and shouted to all of us, ‘Get down!’ Almost in the same movement, he vaulted over the seat, pushed me to the floor, and sat on my right shoulder to keep me down and to protect me. ‘Get down!’ he shouted again to all of us. Agent Youngblood's quick reaction was as brave an act as I have ever seen anyone perform. When a man, without a moment's thought or hesitation, places himself between you and a possible assassin’s bullet, you know you have seen courage. And you never forget it.”
Love that LBJ quote!
Thank you Tara, you’re a great teacher!
Youngblood, another name we should remember!
