(1) QUESTION: Which First Lady or First Ladies was/were fluent in at least five different languages? Extra credit if you know which languages.
ANSWER: Lou Hoover could reportedly speak English, Latin, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Mandarin. You won’t be surprised to hear some sources credit Melania Trump with the ability to speak 5 or 6 languages, while others discredit it. According to the Miller Center at the University of Virginia, though, Mrs. Trump speaks Slovenian, Italian, German, French, and English. The Wall Street Journal adds Serbian to that list.
(2) QUESTION: True or False? Thomas Jefferson was fluent in 6 languages.
ANSWER: True. He was fluent in English, French, Greek, Italian, Latin, and Spanish.
(3) QUESTION: One President could speak in Mandarin. Which President?
ANSWER: Herbert Hoover. He lived in China for a time, working as a mining engineer. Since both Hoovers could speak Mandarin, they sometimes spoke in that language when together to avoid being overheard.
I was told by a friend who spoke Latin, once learned, most European languages could be spoken and understood. Thanks Tara for the knowledge.
