(1) QUESTION: Which President famously renounced his daily cup of tea for patriotic reasons? “Accordingly I have drank coffee every afternoon since,” he declared, “and have borne it very well. Tea must be universally renounced. I must be weaned, and the sooner, the better.”
ANSWER: John Adams. He wrote those words to his wife Abigail in 1774.
(2) QUESTION: Which President quipped, “I never drink coffee at lunch. I find it keeps me awake for the afternoon.”
ANSWER: Ronald Reagan. Our 40th President had a joke for just about everything, didn’t he?
(3) QUESTION: Which President reportedly coined the phrase “Good to the last drop,” which became part of the Maxwell House coffee slogan?
ANSWER: Theodore Roosevelt. He may have had some on a trip to Tennessee, and he may have uttered the phrase. Maxwell House certainly claimed it, but the matter is disputed.
Reagan was a favorite because of his humor. He was all around good too.
Sounds like Adams.
Teddy is often controversial.
Thank you Tara. Good questions this week.
The chapter names of Reagan's biography could be based on his jokes.
