(1) QUESTION: Many Vice Presidents have become President upon the passing of their predecessor, but how many have become President by being elected on their own? Which Presidents? (Note: The question is about individuals elected President while they are still serving as Vice President, with no break between their vice presidency and their presidency).
ANSWER: Four. John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren, George H.W. Bush. Richard Nixon and Joe Biden were both Vice Presidents who became President, but there was a gap between their two terms.
(2) QUESTION: Which future President ran for Vice President in 1920 and lost?
ANSWER: Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was the running mate of James Cox, who lost the presidency that year to Warren Harding. Harding would go on to serve most of his term, but he passed away in August 1923, making Vice President Calvin Coolidge the next President. Can you imagine if Harding had lost to Cox in 1920? We might never have had a President Coolidge.
(3) QUESTION: How many times have a President and Vice President served together for 8 years, then been succeeded by another President and Vice President who served together for 8 years?
ANSWER: Two times. Clinton-Gore served together for 8 years. They were succeeded by Bush-Cheney, who also served together for 8 years. Obama-Biden served together for 8 years after that.
